In the newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, HKUST has continued to be rated No. 1 in Hong Kong in the broad subject area of Engineering and Technology. Ranked at 52th globally, the University has maintained its top place in this area locally for 14 consecutive years.

Among individual subjects under this broad subject area, HKUST has seen a jump in nearly all subjects and an impressive position of world’s No. 10 in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence subject. HKUST made its first appearance in this subject ranking this year, which was launched in 2023 and has been expanded this year to include more new institutions.

Six individual subjects from two broad subject areas (including five from the Engineering & Technology area) are No. 1 in Hong Kong. They are Chemical Engineering (No. 73), Computer Science & Information Systems (No. 32), Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (No. 10), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (No. 29), Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (No. 42), and Statistics & Operational Research (No. 43). Civil and Structural Engineering was rated No. 27.

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject features 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas. The rankings were determined by five indicators, namely academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, h-index, and international research network.
