HKUST Ranked 11th in World’s Top AI Institutions with Prof. GUO Yike, Prof. Pascale FUNG & Three PhD Students Named Top AI Contributors

Two faculty members and three PhD students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering were selected among world’s Top AI Contributors and their research work chosen as world’s Top 100 AI Achievements in 2022-2023 by an automatic metric based on publications and citations by the International Open Benchmark Council (BenchCouncil), a non-profit international organization dedicated to benchmarks and evaluations. Additionally, HKUST has been ranked 11th in world’s Top AI Institutions and is the top 2 institution from China with Tsinghua University at ninth.

The University’s top minds in AI are Prof. GUO Yike, HKUST Provost and Chair Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and Electronic & Computer Engineering, Prof. Pascale FUNG, Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, and her PhD student Yejin BANG, as well as Computer Science and Engineering PhD students LI Feng and ZHANG Hao.

Their Top AI Achievements are their research work on papers titled “Pathway to Future Symbiotic Creativity” (Prof. Guo Yike), “A Multitask, Multilingual, Multimodal Evaluation of ChatGPT on Reasoning, Hallucination, and Interactivity” (Prof. Pascale Fung & Yejin Bang), as well as “DINO: DETR with Improved DeNoising Anchor Boxes for End-to-End Object Detection” and “DN-DETR: Accelerate DETR Training by Introducing Query DeNoising” (Li Feng & Zhang Hao).

 

Prof. Yoonseob KIM Named Influential Researcher by Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research

Prof. Yoonseob KIM, Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been elected to the 2023 Class of Influential Researchers in Asia and Pacific by Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research (I&EC Research), the largest and most-cited general chemical engineering research journal in the world.

I&EC Research’s seventh annual Class of Influential Researchers focuses on researchers in Asia, Australia, and the broader Pacific Region, who are in approximately the first 10 years of their independent careers. Prof. Kim is the only one from Hong Kong among the 38 Influential Researchers selected in 2023.

He is recognized for his outstanding work on solid electrolytes for lithium metal batteries. His recent work centers on the development of highly conductive, selective, and stable solid electrolytes using porous polymers for battery applications.
 


Prof. WANG Zhe and PhD Student ZHENG Wanfu Won Second Place in NeurIPS 2023 CityLearn Challenge

Prof. WANG Zhe and his PhD student ZHENG Wanfu from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering have won second place in the control track of NeurIPS 2023 CityLearn Challenge, a global competition that leverages the potential of AI and distributed control systems to address vital problems in the built-environment domain. The challenge was hosted by AIcrowd, Intelligent Environments Lab of the University of Texas at Austin, and Energy Efficient Cities initiative of the University of Cambridge. The 2023 challenge attracted over 2,500 submissions from 105 teams and more than 660 participants worldwide in its two tracks (forecast track and control track).
