Googol Technology (Googoltech), a company co-founded by Colin Lam Ko Yin Professor of Engineering Prof. LI Zexiang (Professor) and Prof. KO Ping-Keung (Professor Emeritus) of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering 24 years ago, was successfully listed on the ChiNext Board of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on August 15, 2023.

Established in 1999 as a member of HKUST’s Entrepreneurship Program, the hi-tech enterprise is the first in Asia Pacific to focus on motion controllers and controller-based systems. Its products and systems are used in a wide variety of industrial applications, such as microelectronics, robots, computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, electronic processing and testing, printing, packaging, and production automation. Since its founding, Googoltech has deployed more than 600,000 sets of advanced motion control systems for over 2,000 equipment manufacturers.

An exemplary academic-entrepreneur, Prof. Li has been committed to translating research from the laboratory into useful products for industries. Over the years, he has developed a sustainable and systematic model to train innovative talents to be entrepreneurs. In addition to Googoltech, Prof. Li is also a co-founder of DJI (consumer drones), QKM Technology (high-end lightweight intelligent robots), CiDi (smart automotive driving), and ePropulsion Technology (electric marine propulsion systems), among others.

He co-founded the Songshan Lake Xbot Park in Dongguan and Mingyue Lake International Smart Industry Innovation Park in Chongqing, becoming a leading contributor to the hi-tech start-up ecosystem in the Greater Bay Area.

He was selected as one of the 40 model innovators and entrepreneurs for the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in 2020 and received “The InnoStars Award” by Our Hong Kong Foundation in 2018. He was also a co-recipient of the prestigious IEEE Robotics and Automation Award in 2019.

He has served as the Director of Hong Kong Center for Construction Robotics since 2020, which is supported under the Hong Kong government’s collaborative InnoHK Clusters initiative.
