The School of Engineering (SENG) and HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute (SRI) co-organized a forum themed “TECHxSTARTUP Sharing” followed by an alumni spring dinner in Shenzhen on 25 March 2017 (Saturday). Over 120 cross-disciplined alumni and faculty members attended this joy-filled gathering, broadened their network, exchanged knowledge and experience.

The reunion kicked off at the SRI where alumni were warmly welcomed by Prof Enboa Wu, Associate Vice-President for Knowledge Transfer.  Prof Tim Kwang Ting Cheng, Dean of Engineering, then presented the overview and latest development of SENG.  Following these were a number of sharing sessions featuring SENG entrepreneurs and their achievements. They included Dr Tony Jiang, 2012 PhD in Mechanical Engineering, CEO & Founder of Invisible Technology; Mr Zachary Jiang, undergraduate student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and Mr Anik Dey, 2010 BEng in Electronic Engineering and 2015 MPhil in Electronic and Computer Engineering, Chief User Experience Officer of Ivo Technologies Company Limited.

In addition, Prof Ricky Lee, Director of SRI, introduced the “2017 HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition (Shenzhen)” and Blue Bay project which is an incubator scheme of SRI. Prof C Y Tsui, Associate Dean of Engineering, delivered the closing remarks and expressed sincere thanks to the guest speakers for their inspiring sharing.

A reunion dinner was held in the same evening. Following the welcome remarks by Prof Ricky Lee, faculty members including Prof Enboa Wu, Prof Tim Cheng, Prof Ricky Lee, Prof C Y Tsui, Prof Jerome Yen, Adjunct Professor of Departments of Finance and Mathematics, Prof Bertram Shi, Head of Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), Prof Huihe Qiu, Associate Head of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Prof Jiheng Zhang, Associate Professor of Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM), Prof James She, Assistant Professor of ECE and Prof Xiaowei Zhang, Assistant Professor of IELM, led the toasting to welcome all the attending alumni.

All the participants enjoyed a delightful dinner with a harmonica musical performance by Mr David Xiong of SRI and an exciting street dance by SENG alumnus Dr Tony Jiang, rounds of lucky draw and also a mini-forum rendering discussions about the role of HKUST and opportunities in the Hong Kong-Shenzhen collaboration on technology and entrepreneurship.

Prof Tim Cheng concluded the reunion dinner by thanking all the alumni, faculty and friends for their participation and support to the alumni day.  Heartfelt appreciation also goes to Mr Cai Yufeng, 2004 EMBA, Dr Peng Huajun, 2005 PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Prof Wei Shyy, Executive Vice-President & Provost for their sponsorship of lucky draw prizes for the dinner.
