Meet the Dean
Greetings from the HKUST School of Engineering!
In this “Century of Engineering”, engineers will have tremendous opportunities to contribute and make a difference to the world. The global challenges we face – in energy, healthcare, security, climate, environment, even the economy – all demand engineering solutions. The society needs more talents with innovative vision, technical knowledge, collaborative mindsets, and caring characters to find answers to these complex issues, across engineering disciplines and beyond.
It is such impactful seekers and builders, ideas dynamos and entrepreneurs, that we strive to foster at our young and remarkably dynamic School. HKUST, only established in 1991, was ranked 15th globally in the QS World University Rankings in Engineering and Technology 2017.
In both our research endeavors and pioneering engineering education, the School sets its sights on excellence: from our internationally renowned faculty members and increasingly multicultural student body to our first-rate facilities and partnerships with other leading academic institutions and key industries.
As you will see in browsing our site, we offer an inspiring environment in which to study and work on a campus famed for its beauty. We also enjoy a geographical advantage, situated in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, with its academic freedom and freedom of information, and on the southern coast of China, one of the world’s most dynamic areas of economic and technological development.
In providing the most comprehensive range of engineering disciplines in Hong Kong, flexibility and options to explore different career tracks, professional development and early industry links, wide-ranging global connections and encounters, and an all-round, whole-person student experience, I believe that the School offers a welcoming and exhilarating environment for nurturing next-generation leaders.
Indeed, our alumni testify to the success of our approach, with over 24,000 graduates already making that difference to the world in fields ranging from engineering and academia to finance and NGOs.
Despite our compelling track record, the School will not rest on its laurels. In this era of super-rapid technological change, it takes well-conceived and well-executed strategies, supporting resources, and creative educational approaches to maintain a top engineering program. The high-spirited engineering community at HKUST is already hard at work on building its way to an even brighter future. Whether you are a prospective student, researcher, faculty member or potential partner, why not join us, visit us, or read about us here.
The future of HKUST Engineering School is exciting. I look forward to working with students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to lead our School to new heights in this “Century of Engineering”.
