Individual Research Interest

My general interests are in the fields of fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics. My current research focuses on the physics of acoustic wave interaction with defects in pipe systems; Bragg resonance in pipe systems; defect detection in pipelines; accuracy in modeling high frequency (dispersive) acoustic waves; fluid-structure interaction under high frequency excitation; modeling of cavitation phenomenon during transient pipe flow (multi-phase flow); application of numerical methods (e.g. LBM, FVM, FEM, and FDM) in transient flows. My long-term interests are to extend my current knowledge of fluid mechanics and CFD to be applied in the fields of hydro-environmental engineering, climate change and renewable energy.

Dr Louati obtained his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His MPhil degree is in Renewable Energy (in Mechanical Engineering Department) from the National School of Engineering of Sfax-Tunisia (ENIS) where he also obtained his BEng degree in Electro-mechanics. Currently, Dr Louati is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (HKUST) working on a theme-based project entitled “Smart Urban Water Supply System” (Smart UWSS). Being the Research Coordinator for two tasks in this project, he is managing a team of four Research Assistants and co-supervising three MPhil/PhD students and about six final year project students per year. Dr Louati has ample experience in analytical analysis, modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental work.

Since September 2016, Dr Louati is the Editorial Assistant of the Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR). Dr Louati is a member of IAHR and IAHR-HK-Chapter. Dr Louati publishes his papers in top journals in his field. His papers and work are well received in his community. Dr Louati has actively participated in defining the research ideas and in the writing of five successfully granted research proposals and contributed to their research investigation. Dr Louati was awarded scholarships for four years as well as the SENG PhD Fellowship Awards for three years, and he received the SENG Overseas Research Award. He was accepted in the John F. Kennedy Student Paper Competition 2013. Dr Louati has co-organized the special session on “Transients in pipes” at the 37th IAHR World Congress in Kuala Lumpur on August 13-18, 2017, and he co-organized the Mini-Symposium on “Transients and Geysers in Urban Systems” at 8th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics at University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA on June 4-7, 2018. Dr Louati has also served as co-organizing chair of several other symposiums and workshops. His communication skills are excellent. He speaks fluently three languages (Arabic, French and English) and he enjoys teaching as well as working/collaborating with colleagues.

Dr Louati led and organized successfully two social events on “Islam Awareness and Eid Celebration” at HKUST, sponsored by the Student Enrichment Activities (SEA) fund (Student Affair Office). Dr Louati is still organizing events that enhance diversity in HKUST. Dr Louati has co-led to the foundation of Muslim Student Society (MSS) in HKUST and he is currently a member of the advisory board of this society.
