Individual Research Interest

His current research interests are about the theories, implementations and experiments for:

1) cyber-physical social media systems/networks;

2) analytics of viral media delivery in digital-human social systems/networks;

3) mobile media broadcast systems/networks.

James completed his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada in August 2009. He was awarded an honor of “Outstanding Achievement of Graduate Studies” by the university for his PhD degree, which is one of the only two of such recognitions for outstanding PhD graduates across all faculties. He is also the recipient of multiple national awards in 2009 – NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, NSERC Innovation Challenge Award (the 1st runner-up) and Canada-UK Millennium Research Award. His PhD thesis on Coded Wireless Video Broadcast/Multicast has secured funding further research, prototype development and commercialization from the C4-Proof of Principle program, the NSERC Idea-to-Innovation program, and the Ontario Centres of Excellence-Market Readiness program. During his PhD study, he has generated 5 International, US, Taiwanese patents and authored/co-authored 20 publications. He is also nominated by the engineering faculty and the university for 2010 NSERC Doctoral Prizes recently, which is a national award to recognize the excellence of the PhD thesis for the contributions in engineering and science across Canada. Since November 2009, James joined the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in United Kingdom as a Research Fellow. Currently, James is visiting Hong Kong University of Science & Technology as a Assistant Professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering.

James received his BEng degree in Computer Engineering and his MPhil degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong. His master’s thesis on Internet-based video broadcasting generated US and Chinese patents. The patents were licensed to a multimedia communications startup, SinoCDN Limited (Hong Kong). From 2000-2003, James served as Chief Technology Officer for SinoCDN Limited, leading a team of 12 engineers in product development and systems integration. In 2001, James was the youngest recipient, to-date, to be named one of “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” by the Innovation and Technology Association and the Information Technology Department, of the Government of Hong Kong. In addition, he received two Hong Kong Industry Awards with his patented technology. The same patents were acquired by a US firm in 2008.
