To enhance the overall quality of PhD research education, the School of Engineering has established the PhD Research Excellence Award scheme as recognition of outstanding achievements by our PhD students/graduates. The Research Awards will be granted to PhD students/graduates who have made the most original and influential research achievements to knowledge in the discipline. The award to be recognized should arise from the work that has been carried out mainly at HKUST.
The SENG PhD Research Excellence Awards are open to :
Final Year PhD students;
PhD graduates who have completed the program requirements between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 in the School of Engineering.
Type of award: PhD Research Excellence Award
Only one award will be granted. The awardee will receive a prize of HK$25,000.
To encourage interdisciplinary research exchange and bring dynamic aspiration to the students, awardee will be invited to share his/her research lives during his/her study at HKUST in an open forum.
Nomination Process and Conditions
Nomination can be made by one Nominator who is the candidate's supervisor and at least 2 endorsers who are faculty members within the School of Engineering. At most one endorser can be the student's committee member from outside HKUST.
All nominations must be submitted by the deadline to the School. These nominations will then be reviewed and ranked by the department/program committee of the nominee. The top ranked nominations from each department/program will then be considered by the School Panel Committee.
(ii) A recommendation letter stating the achievement written by the nominating group.Other supporting letters from recognized experts are welcome.
(iii) A current curriculum vitae of the nominee giving details of his/her academic qualification, awards, and research output such as publication, conference paper & patents and any other relevant materials to strengthen the nomination.
(iv) A list of publication with the citation information including ISI Web of Science (Times Cited & Times cited after removing self-citations), ISI JCR (Impact Factor, 2015), Scopus (Times cited) & Google Scholar (Times Cited)
Past awardees cannot be nominated.
Each department/program can nominate up to 10% of the annual RPG graduates in that year
A nominee should demonstrate his/her research achievements arisen from the work that has been carried out mainly at HKUST. The criteria to be considered include, but are not limited to, the following:
Research outputs (e.g., publications, patents, published design work), and their originality and innovativeness;
Impact of the research outputs on society, industry and the relevant engineering disciplines in the form of citation and practical application, as well as recognition by professional communities;
Academic qualification as well as awards & prizes of the nominee;
Good communication and presentation skills as well as ability to articulate their ideas.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to present their research work and acomplishments in HKUST to the panel.
The complete nomination packages for the candidates should be submitted to the School by email to Miss Kammy Chan (firstname.lastname@example.org) on or before 26 August 2016 (Friday).
Nominations should be submitted to the candidate's dept/program. Each unit will consider all submissions and submit the vetted nominations to the school of Engineering.
Nominations will be considered by the Engineering Research Committee comprising six faculty members, who are appointed by Dean and shall serve on their individual capacity
All members of the Committee can participate in the deliberations on the award. However, any member who is directly affiliated with a nominee, i.e. a thesis supervisor, co-author of a paper or a member of the thesis committee will be excused from the vote on that candidate.
The Engineering Research Committee will decide on the procedure for selection and the details of selection criteria and their relative weights
The Award Scheme is coordinated and administered by School Office
The Committee reserves the right not to give any award in any year.
