A Civil Engineering alumnus and an undergraduate student, who were both supervised by Prof Charles Ng in their final year projects, were awarded a student prize and a scholarship respectively by the Geotechnical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Chun Ho Cheng, 2016 BEng in Civil Engineering, received the AECOM Prize for Best Student of the Year, which is presented to students attaining outstanding performance in geotechnical subjects in local universities. Chun Ho designed an environmentally-friendly landfill cover with construction and demolition wastes in his final year project, providing a practical solution to a problem that society urgently needs to address. He expressed his gratitude to Prof Ng as well as other HKUST professors in equipping him to the best of his potential. He is currently a graduate engineer at AECOM.

Year 4 undergraduate student Annie Yan Yan Wong was awarded the LPM Contractors Scholarship, which aims to provide financial assistance and encouragement to undergraduate students to pursue studies in geotechnical engineering. Inspired by Prof Ng, she is going to further her studies with an MPhil in Civil Engineering to conduct geotechnical research upon graduation. She is determined to take the path to become a geotechnical engineer in the future.
