E2I Conversations on Engineering Learning and Teaching

Center for Engineering Education Innovation (E2I) will offer a series of conversations in the Spring semester of 2012. The idea is to form a learning community for the SENG faculty to exchange views on a topic related to engineering learning and teaching in an informal and collegiate environment. The three conversations in this semester focus on academic advising, with an emphasis on School-Based Admission (SBA) students. Each conversation will take place over lunch (at 12:30 - 14:00) in the training room of E2I (Room 6581 via Lifts 27-28). Dates and topics of the three conversations are as follows:

February 22 (Wednesday)        Support for Faculty Advisors

After sharing by colleagues who advised SBA students last semester, the conversation will center on clarifying the roles and responsibilities of faculty advisors and identifying their training needs.

March 28 (Wednesday)        System-level Coordination

Students are unique individuals with advising needs that may vary over time. How can we ensure that the different advising personnel work effectively together to meet those needs? How would we know that the system as a whole is working well?

April 25 (Wednesday)        Academic Advising beyond the First Year

SBA students will be advised by Department-level Faculty Advisors (DFAs) after major declaration. What should be done to ensure a smooth transition? Are there special advising issues that may come up and, if so, how best to support the DFAs in handling them?

Please mark your calendar for the conversations that you are interested in joining. An announcement of registration will be made about one week before each conversation.
